I sent this to the info@ address. Let's copy it here for reference for everyone. I haven't received a reply yet, so feel free to answer here, too.

Could you explain the current methods for (1) adding more files under current entries, and (2) removing files? In particular, in the Open Source Movies section. I don't think it's clearly spelled out anywhere.

I was reading about a "replace item" dialog, however that seems to be defunct at the moment. What's the best method for the time being? Just upload a whole new entry and ask you to remove the old one?

Thanks, and keep up the good work.

Yes, I have one as well. That unfortunately doesn't address the main issue of what to do with entries that have already been processed. (After they are approved by a curator, they are moved off the upload server into the archive servers, which means you no longer have access to them.)

So if you know the identifier for your item
(typically the name of the subdir in your incoming FTP dir), you can change XXX below to your identifier and that should work:
http://www.archive.org/movies/details-edit.php?identifier=XXX

oh, and i'm sorry that the new
"replacing files within an item" for movies
is not yet publicly available.

but i think it's going to be july.
BUT we are very very close to it happening.
our "power users" are starting to use it this weekend, and once I get some user help pages up, and some curation framework in place, we should be very close. I am on vacation the end of june, so that's why i'm thinking july now.

sorry for any inconvenience! but progress really *is* happening behind the scenes! 8-)

It's good to hear that the option to replace/update and/or remove files is being worked on. Should we expect to see this option in the next week?

Otherwise, please feel free to delete my files, and I'll simply upload my updated movie afterwards.

Thank you for the prompt reply.

Could you tell me how I can delete my movie files?
Or: If I were to use the "edit item" feature on my details page, and I then used the update file link, and then if selected a different file format, would that displace the current file from being available via download/streaming on my "details" page?

Hi Tracy,
I tried the Ole' rename file, etc. and my details page still allows a streaming of the old movie.

Therefore, yes! I'd like to take you up on your offer to remove the files. In fact, feel free to remove all of my movie files and I will upload replacements for them.

I sure apppreciate you taking the time to do this, and I'm sure members will benefit too.

I hesitate to post a link to the details page(s) in question, because these forum postings come up on Search-engine results and I hate to direct even more people to my old movie...please let me know if you require addtional information and I will promptly reply!

my email is my name @ [our domain]

if you let me know the list of identifiers/pages,
i can darken them and remove them from our SE...

alternatively, if you'd like to play with our new item management system (it works but we haven't got all the help pages and such worked out), i can send you an email with how to proceed with that!

Can I have some files removed even if the account with the provider where the files were stored has been closed for years and the webpages with the old provider were disabled? The pages are years old and obsolete, and all the photos that use to appear on the pages were deleted. I'd like all the stored templates (which are skeletons) removed. The content isn't something that should be archived since all the info shows blank PICs everywhere. What good is something that's 5 years old with no photos?

This would be awesome. One thing about the Archive I love is that they are dedicated to making it easier to make sure the videos are up and accessible.

But, the removal/update of content would be make them "awesomer". ;-)

I'd really be enthusiastic to get something done with this, any chance someone could reply?

Also, I sent a notice several days back about removing some redundant MPEG1 files and corresponding MPEG4 files, would be great if someone could look into that.

It also doesn't seem to be possible to delete files under the FTP upload server. Anything you can do about that?
